Why do you think Van Gaal prefer this formation rather than 4-4-2. Everyone know that the defensive side of Manchester United is weak and not compatible with the strong attack side of the team, so they need to backup that defense with four defenders! The other question is why is he swapping the roles of some players; such as Rooney, he's a striker but Van Gaal put him as CAM, also Di Maria is a right winger, but Van Gaal let him play today as a striker side by side with Falcao.
They got their win today but it was not that easy, and this formation may not work with other teams like Chelsea and Manchester City.
